The teachers, faculty and students of
Annie R. Morgan Elementary have been working hard to build foundations of excellence by providing parental and community involvement activities that are engaging to both parents and students, and that also address the academic needs of the students.
“We recognize that parental and community involvement is important to building foundations at our school that will stand the test of time,” said Assistant Principal LaTatia Arnold. “Our parental and community involvement activities are our ways of building the community today for a better tomorrow.”
Recently, the school has hosted the following activities to get both students, parents and community members engaged in the educational process:
Literacy Night
Author Vincent Taylor visited and spoke to parents about the importance of reading comprehension. He provided strategies for getting students involved in their own learning through music.
Cornbread, the main character of Mr. Taylor’s chapter books, made a special appearance, surprising parents and students as they saw a storybook figure come to life.
Math and Science Night
Parents participated in hands-on science and math activities with their children. The students spent time teaching their parents all about probability, and graded their parents’ work, as well.
Bring Your Dad to School Day
Students brought their dads to school to spend time learning with them in the classroom by participating in reading and math activities.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from a few guest speakers. School Advisory Council Chair Michael Willis spoke to the dads about the importance of their presence in their child’s academic career, while PTA Chair Mr. Pittman discussed opportunities to support the school and the students by volunteering.
