In honor of its 10th anniversary, Mayor John Peyton presented
LaVilla School of the Arts with an official proclamation recognizing May as LaVilla School of the Arts month.

The proclamation encourages Jacksonville and its citizens to support and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school and its contributions to Jacksonville’s culture as a foundation to its future.
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts was established to educate young artists within downtown Jacksonville in an area known for its historically rich artistic community known as the LaVilla district; and
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts provides a state recognized scholastic program, offering opportunities for all of Jacksonville’s youth in art, music, dance, theatre, and creative writing; and
WHEREAS: Since the year 2000, over 10,000 of Jacksonville’s children have received preparation in the arts and continue to contribute to the city’s cultural climate with an appreciation for and an education in the arts; and
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts serves as the only public arts magnet middle school for Jacksonville with a student population that represents all of our community’s diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds; and
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts students carry on the community’s renowned musical heritage and represents Jacksonville at many local events, including the annual Jazz Festival, Downtown Jacksonville Art Walks, events at Jacksonville Public Library, Times-Union Center for the Arts and various city celebrations; have received state and national awards in arts and academics; and
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts parents, business partners and community members donate more than 6,500 hours annually in volunteer service to maintain the programs in the arts for Jacksonville’s middle school children; and
WHEREAS: Students will present performances and historical writing works celebrating the ten years of established excellence in arts education on May 13th and 14th at our annual Showcase performance in the LaVilla School of the Arts Theatre; and
WHEREAS: LaVilla School of the Arts represents a dedication to the history at the core of Jacksonville’s LaVilla district and to the belief that all of Jacksonville’s children deserve an opportunity to receive the best in an arts education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN PEYTON, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, do hereby proclaim May as
LAVILLA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS MONTH
in Jacksonville and encourage all citizens to celebrate the 10th anniversary of LaVilla School of the Arts, support this outstanding arts school, celebrate its contribution to Jacksonville’s culture as a foundation to its future.
