Second-grade students at
Biscayne Elementary recently put on a special performance of a play entitled
Rusty the Red Bear, which deals with the problem of prejudice in a gentle aspect.

The story surrounds Rusty, the only red bear in a forest of brown and black bears who tease him unmercifully. One day a magic butterfly befriends Rusty and takes him to visit a red rose garden, a family of red cardinals and an apple orchard, heavy with red apples. When Rusty sees the beauty of each, he realizes that none would be more special if it were black or brown. He understands that he is beautiful, too, and that every color is beautiful in its own way.

Teacher Tiffany Keen-Davis says the play had a great message for the second graders, and it was an appropriate age for the students to learn about social skills and how to treat others.
"This play allowed us to teach the students in a positive
way about being different. It is important that our children know that not
everyone is the same, and even though we are different, we are all special and
should be proud of it."
