Third- through fifth-graders at
Chaffee Trail Elementary had the opportunity to watch JEA's green program "To Search for a Better Light" as part of their school-wide initiative to Go Green.
Re-duce, a character from planet Go Green, visited Earth and Chaffee Trail Elementary, specifically, on a quest to find a better and more energy efficient light source. He explained to the students that his planet had already determined how to reduce energy and water consumption, but they still needed advice about light.
During the program, Re-duce quizzed the students about ways they knew how to save energy and water, and encouraged them to teach their parents and friends about how they, too, could help save our environment.
To help him with his quest for a better light, Re-duce called his sister and brother, Re-use and Re-cycle, who told him to ask the students where he could find compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use less energy to produce the same amount of light as a standard incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer. The students directed him to stores like Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes.
According to Assistant Principal Casie Doyle, students at Chaffee Trail are already implementing many initiatives to Go Green, including a recycling center and club. They will also be celebrating Earth Day later this month by picking up trash around the school campus, re-mulching the property and installing bird feeders they built themselves.
