Ribault High School Student Receives Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Student Award

Evelyn Shepard, a senior enrolled in the Early College Program at Jean Ribault High School, was recently recognized during Florida State College at Jacksonville’s (FSCJ) annual North Campus Student Awards ceremony.

“Evelyn is a very hard worker and is very deserving of this award,” said Vivian Bradford, guidance counselor at Ribault High School. “She is the type of student who puts nothing before her academic career.”

Evelyn was nominated for this prestigious award by FSCJ Professor John Marr. Professor Marr selected Evelyn based on her outstanding academic performance in his Principles of Economics class.

Evelyn boasts a grade point average of 4.3 and plans to attend the University of North Florida, where she will major in nursing.

The Early College Program is a small learning community (school within a school) that blends high school and college courses to provide a rigorous yet supportive program to help students earn a high school diploma and tuition-free credit toward a post-secondary degree. In grades 11 and 12, Early College students are enrolled full time at the community college. The Early College Program provides students greater access to higher education and promotes student achievement at the high school and post-secondary level.

The Early College Program is currently at Jean Ribault and Robert E. Lee high schools and will be expanding to Englewood and Sandalwood high schools beginning fall 2010.
