Recent Events Bring More Fun and Reading to Stockton Elementary

Fourth-graders at John Stockton Elementary prepared in a big way for their field trip to Kingsley Plantation by reading The Treasure of Amelia Island by M. C. Finotti aloud in their classrooms.

This fictional book about Mary Kingsley and her life set the historical stage for what the students would see. To bring the history more to life for the students, author M. C. Finotti came to Stockton, read some of her book and told them about her research.

“The trip to Kingsley Plantation was a walk back in time and we could envision the characters from the book riding horses, encountering alligators and truly appreciating what life was like,” said fourth-grade teacher Cindy Fitch. “M.C. Finotti told us about palm trees that Ana Jai Kingsley planted lining the walk to the house, and we found them! History truly came alive for us.”

Stockton's Play Day

Laughter and cheers radiated through John Stockton Elementary as students recently enjoyed Play Day, thanks to the school’s volunteers.

Volunteer Diana Martin headed up the day and planned a variety of imaginative games.

Mummy building teams wrapped a teammate in toilet paper and the first team to fully wrap their “mummy” won. Teams of nesting chickens took their “eggs” to the nest between their legs while flapping their wings and clucking. Life skills were learned in the clothes hanging game when each child had to hang a basket of clothes on the line then take it down and race back to their team.

Everyone had a great time at Stockton’s Play Day, and students and staff thank the volunteers for all their hard work.
