Field Day Brings Math Fun to Biltmore Elementary

Biltmore Elementary recently hosted its annual Math Field Day, providing students with the opportunity to participate in fun events that sharpened their math skills.

Students competed in the Mini-Metric Olympics, the shot put using a cotton ball, and the javelin “straw” throw, just to name a few of the field day events. There was also an interactive station operated by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt representative Tabitha Williams.

Throughout the event, students participated in estimation games, duck duck goose using times tables and number recognition challenges. Once the students completed the games, they were given ribbons, prizes and a stamp in their “My Measurement Book” to signify that they had completed that station.

Upon completion, the teachers deposited the books for a drawing for prizes donated by Pizza Hut, Subway and Prentice Hall. Students were also given water bottles that sported the insignia winner – "Doing your best makes you a Winner." Water stations were manned by volunteers from the Paxon School for Advanced Studies ROTC and cadets from Camp Blanding.

"Everyone had a wonderful time and could clearly see that math is fun," said math coach Nikki Torian. "It was our goal to encourage students to embrace math and understand that math is exciting and is in every aspect of their daily lives."
