Spotlight On Education

Dudes Read at Abess Park Elementary

Men from all over the community recently visited Abess Park Elementary to spend time reading to students for their Dudes Do Read event.

Before their reading adventures, the dads, grandpas, uncles, teachers, businessmen and local "celebrities" visited the media center for a breakfast lovingly made by school staff and also provided by Krispy Kreme and Grinders Cafe.

During breakfast, the guest readers all signed a surfboard that will be proudly displayed in the media center, and will remind students of the day the Dudes visited their school to make reading fun. After enjoying their meal, students in the safety patrol escorted the guest readers to the classrooms.

In one classroom, Lawrence Dennis, the district’s chief officer of middle schools, told the students to “read and read well, as reading is the foundation for everything else.” He also talked to the fifth-grade students about their upcoming transition to middle school.

Assistant Principal Ms. Mayfield-Price, who organized the event, made it a priority to send reading invitations to men involved with their feeder middle and high schools, such as teachers and principals.

Principal Caroline Wells applauded Mayfield-Price's efforts.

“It's a wonderful idea for our students to see teachers and principals from our feeder schools so they can interact with their future leaders in a fun and non-threatening way,” said Wells. “It’s also a great opportunity for these men to see their future students.”

Later in the day, high school students from Fletcher and Paxon School for Advanced Studies even stopped by to read to a few classrooms, demonstrating to the elementary students that it’s cool to read regardless of what grade they are in.
