Duval County has been nationally recognized for its implementation of System 44 at
A. Philip Randolph (APR) Academies of Technology.
System 44 is a Scholastic reading program that focuses on phonics. It enhances Duval’s READ 180 program by addressing the needs of beginning readers and decoders. System 44 was developed for the struggling reader. It helps students understand that the English language is a system composed of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. Technology involves highly motivated materials that are age-appropriate. Thus even the most challenged reader can achieve success which is the ultimate goal of every school.
In Kim Mason’s stand-alone model classroom, seven out of nine students have made a year’s growth or more in reading, with several students making as much as five years growth.
Mason has been acknowledged as the teacher of a master classroom and will speak at the National Scholastic Summer Institute in Orlando to share this accomplishment.
“I’ve taught reading for three years and this first year with System 44 has been amazing,” said Mason. “I look forward to sharing our successes in Orlando.”
Since opening in 1979, APR has changed missions several times but never veered from the path of helping students achieve success. As a dedicated magnet high school, APR students are preparing to enter the workforce and/or continue their education in one of the following areas: health science, IT (information technology), EMC (energy manufacturing & construction), public safety & criminal justice, fire & rescue, and cosmetology.
