The students, faculty and staff of
Mayport Middle School recently participated in a three-day Career Fair, which included more than 80 business and community representatives from Jacksonville and the local beaches.
The purpose of the fair was to teach students about the wide variety of career options available and how they relate to the academics students explore in middle school.
Drs. Gerry Pinto and Quinton White, both from the Marine Science department at Jacksonville University spoke to students in the school's new Coastal Sciences magnet program.
A strong emphasis was placed in the areas where job growth continues to be strong, including the health fields, military and the Jacksonville port.
In the health fields, participants included Baptist Beaches Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Dr. Diane Johnson of Johnson Chiropractic and school nurse Karen Smith.
The Navy community was well represented with Captain Aaron Bowman presenting information about his work as a pilot and Commander of the Naval Station at Mayport. Twenty-six additional Navy volunteers participated from a variety of fields including air traffic controllers, the educational liaison, Navy JAGs, photojournalists, rescue swimmers and a bomb sniffing dog and his handlers.
Other participants included Atlantic Beach Mayor Mike Borno, Neptune Beach Mayor Harriet Pruette and parents, which included more than a dozen, attorneys, engineers, architects, graphic designers, caterers, the Jacksonville film industry's commissioner and a radio broadcaster.
Daily participants included representatives from JAXPORT, the Society of Professional Engineers, Wachovia Bank and urban planner Alyce Decker.
