Englewood High Teacher Receives READ 180 Outstanding Educator Award

Terri Taylor, a READ 180 teacher at Englewood High School, is one of only four teachers nationwide to receive the 2010 Scholastic Outstanding Educator Award.

The Outstanding Educator Awards recognize the exceptional vocational commitment of READ 180 educators who have helped students overcome their reading challenges, truly turning students’ lives around.

“Ms. Taylor has been a model teacher here at Englewood High,” wrote her nominating educator. “I’ve seen her first hand, firmly yet caringly helping her students get back on the right track.”

In addition to teaching Stage C at Englewood High School, Terri also serves as the Department Chairperson for the School Reading Department. The combination of her two roles, make her a notable leader in her school and district.

What really sets Terri apart as an Outstanding Educator is the mentorship and the guidance she shows to the students in her classroom. Terri is constantly coming up with new and creative ideas to motivate her students and guide them toward success, such inviting guest speakers into her classroom and by creating a "Points Store" as an incentive for students.

READ 180 for Terri isn't only about raising reading scores, but helping students' to realize their full potential. At the very beginning of the school year, Terri reiterates to her students that READ 180 is an opportunity for them to change their lives forever. This sets the stage for learning in Terri's classroom and from that moment she sets monthly goals for her students as stepping stones for their success. By signing a contract, her students vow to try their best, and when they achieve their goals Terri rewards their accomplishments.

In addition to receiving this prestigious award, Terri was also named Englewood High School’s 2010 Teacher of the Year.
