Abess Park Elementary’s first- and second-grade students recently had a hands-on science experiment in hatching chicks.
Andy Toelle from the Duval County Extension Service City of Jacksonville Agriculture Department started the “Hatching Chickens” science project. When he visited Abess Park, he explained to students what an incubator does, how to handle the eggs, and how the eggs drink water and breathe. He also sang a song about how long it will take the eggs to hatch.
The first graders will make observations and learn that animals are like their parents but may look different, while the second graders will observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of animals, particularly the chicken.
Toelle returned to the school a week later to teach students how to candle (look inside) the fertile eggs.
The students are very excited to see their eggs hatch!
