Howard Caraway, principal at
Central Riverside Elementary, was buried in sand on the Book Beach by his students as part of a celebration to honor the students’ reading achievement: more than 65,000 books have been read in the school of under 400 children.
Caraway agreed to be buried in sand if the students met a reading goal of 20,000 books, a goal the students far exceeded.
The celebration was led by Master of Ceremonies Ken Amaro of First Coast News. Also speaking to the students was Coach Anthony Mosely, the head men's basketball coach at Edward Waters College, as well as some of his players.

Central Riverside Elementary is an inner-city school located off Stockton Street. The school received an “A” last year due to the high test scores and commitment to learning from the students and faculty.
Rewarding the students’ reading achievements at Central Riverside is a tradition. Last year, the principal and all male faculty and staff members shaved their heads in honor of the students’ exceeding their goal.
