Darnell-Cookman Students Learn About Quinceanera Traditions and Celebrations

Seventh- and eighth-grade students in teacher Melissa Cash's Spanish class at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High recently learned about a Quinceanera, a coming-of-age celebration for 15-year-old girls in Latin American culture. As part of their studies, the students re-enacted a Quince as part of a class project.

The eighth graders, who learned to salsa last year, were the hosts of the event. They learned the Merengue and took on the rolls of the Quince, her parents, and the ladies and gentlemen of the Quince's court. The seventh graders who learned to salsa this year were guests at the event.

Students brought authentic Spanish food and drinks to cater the event, and a Quince cake was paid for by a grant that Ms. Cash was awarded from the Foreign Language Educators of Northeast Florida for this special cultural project.

All of the students had a great time and Ms. Cash is proud of them for all the hard work they put into the event.
