River City Science Academy Student Completes Eagle Project at School

Travis Maxwell, an eighth-grade student at River City Science Academy (RSCA) and Boy Scout in Troop 887, recently completed his Eagle Project at RSCA. The scout, along with members of his troop, installed a flag pole and landscaping at the school.

He raised funds for his project through various fundraisers, candy sales and solicited donations from the American Legion Post 88 and the Florida Air National Guard.

The flag dedication ceremony was held on June 1 with Commander Benny Combs presenting the flag to Maxwell and RSCA Principal Dogan Tozoglu, Ph.D.

In an address to students, faculty and guests, Maxwell indicated that he chose this as his project “because every school should have a flag and budget cuts do not allow for schools to make this expensive purchase on their own.”

“Having a flag helps to make our students more patriotic, and being able to look out our classroom window and see the flag flying is a great feeling,” added Maxwell.

Students participated in the flag dedication ceremony with great enthusiasm as Maxwell led them in the pledge of allegiance. Dr. Tozoglu presented Maxwell the outstanding citizenship award.

“This is a very special moment for RCSA, and it is an honor to recognize Travis’s accomplishment. I will keep the flag in a special place in the school trophy case forever.”

River City Science Academy is located at 7565 Beach Blvd and is the first charter school in Jacksonville to receive and “A” rating by the Florida Department of Education.
