Darnell-Cookman Student Selected by Boy Scouts of America to Visit President Obama

Congratulations to Darnell-Cookman student Tony DeMarco Hansberry, a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 175, for being selected by the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) National Council to travel to Washington, D.C., as part of a nine-member youth delegation to deliver the BSA’s annual Report to the Nation to President Obama and other elected leaders.

The report highlights the BSA’s achievements during the past year, including progress on scouting programs that address national service, conservation, healthy living and community involvement. This year’s report is especially significant because it closes out the Boy Scouts of America’s first century. The BSA, which marked its first 100 years on February 8, 2010, has created a strong foundation of leadership and service for millions of America’s youth and adult leaders.

In celebration of the 2010 report, the organization will present 100th Anniversary Camporee recognitions in honor of national dignitaries such as President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Speaker of the House John Boehner. Each recognition will be gifted to the BSA local council in which the recipient’s grew up and will provide a scholarship for a local youth to enjoy a Scouting adventure at a camp.

During the six-day trip, the Boy Scout delegation is scheduled to meet with dignitaries at the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Central Intelligence Agency, Arlington National Cemetery, Goddard Space Flight Center, the Pentagon and a number of other locations in the D.C. area.

To keep track of the Report to the Nation delegation while they explore Washington, D.C., follow @boyscouts through Twitter or Boy Scouts of America on Facebook. During the trip, the youth will be answering followers’ questions, which can be submitted online at www.scouting.org.
