This week is National School Counseling Week. We take this time to honor those who dedicate every day to children and the advocacy thereof.
School counselors, in public and private schools, help students reach their full potential. They are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and development. School counselors help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal and social growth of their children by offering support and direction.
Working with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves, school counselors act as brokers of resources that can enhance and complement school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society. Comprehensive school counseling programs are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school by arranging for supplemental support, accommodations or modifications on behalf of our children who require them. School counselors see to it that grades are finalized and credits are attributed when earned. They ensure that a child in need of clothing or shelter is connected to those in the community who can provide it. Those who suffer from abuse, neglect, dependencies and many other destructive forces, can find a link to a helping hand and protection in their school counselors. By removing barriers to academic success, school counselors empower students with a skill set for confronting life’s greatest gauntlets.
In light of these challenging and occasionally troubling times, we want to take a moment to the say “thank you” to those who devote their waking (and sometimes sleeping) hours to children and their futures. Thank you for listening and helping kids with life’s challenges. Thank you for helping our youth to solve problems, make decisions and to advocate for themselves and what they believe in. We believe in you. We appreciate you. We support you.
Happy National School Counseling Week from the First Coast Counseling Association.
