Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Duval County’s high school for students studying the performing and visual arts, hosts its 25th annual showcase, Extravaganza, at the Moran Theater on Saturday, February 12. The Art Exhibition begins at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby; the theater performance commences at 7:30 p.m.
The showcase features student performances that display a wide range of styles of music, dance, theatre, creative writing and cinematic arts.
“Extravaganza is the event that highlights the very best of student achievement at Douglas Anderson,” said Principal Jackie Cornelius.
“Many of these students upon graduation will pursue careers in the arts -- perform on Broadway, dance in prestigious companies, publish in international journals, perform in opera companies, direct studio films, play in professional orchestras, and exhibit in museums and galleries.”
“This is our 25th year of Extravaganza,” explained Ace Martin, the Instrumental Music chairman who started the student showcase in 1986.
“Extravaganza was originally called The Holiday Gift to Jacksonville, and we still view this as an opportunity for the people of Jacksonville to see these talented students perform before they head off to the top universities and conservatories, as well as to Hollywood and Broadway.”
The showcase includes Broadway-style dance and vocal numbers; an orchestra performance of The Barber of Seville; a chorale rendition of KoKa, an eclectic piece from India; a heartfelt film, Departures; and an appearance by the nationally-recognized Douglas Anderson Jazz Ensemble.
Special guest performers at this year’s Extravaganza are two DA alumni: recording artist Delisco, who will perform a dazzling version of Bad from his national touring show “The Music of Michael Jackson”; and Academy Award-nominated animator, writer, and director Ash Brannon, renowned for his work on the Toy Story movies,
Surf’s Up and A Bug’s Life.
Extravaganza is open to the public. Tickets are available at the Times-Union Box Office or at Ticketmaster.com
