DA Student Will Perform in the Jazz Band of America

John Sheard, a senior at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, has been selected to perform in the 2011 Jazz Band of America. The Jazz Band of America is a national ensemble under the direction of Shelly Berg, dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

John is a member of the Douglas Anderson Jazz Ensemble I and Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Ace Martin and Mr. Shawn Barat. He plays the tenor saxophone and has been selected to perform for the Florida All State Jazz Band for the 08-09, 09-10, and 10-11 school years.

John was selected from numerous applicants from across the nation for membership in this prestigious honor ensemble. The members of the band are selected based on a recorded audition that was evaluated by leading music educators.

“To be selected from among their peers for membership in this national ensemble is a great achievement and honor,” says Eric Martin, Music for All President and CEO. “The 2011 Jazz Band of America members are ambassadors of America’s music programs, as well as their states, schools and communities.”

Three days before the concert the students, coming from eight states, will come together for the first time to learn and rehearse the music. They will then perform on Friday, March 18, at Clowes Memorial Hall, located on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
