VSA Florida, the state organization of arts and disability, recently announced the start of its artist residency program at
Highlands Elementary. The program fosters opportunity for all students, including those with disabilities, to successfully learn life skills through the arts. The residency launched January 28 and will continue through March 18, and will be taught by performing artist Katherine Archer.
Residency programs are offered in drama, movement, music and visual arts. The teaching artist works directly with the classroom teacher providing hands-on activities that are age and developmentally appropriate. The sessions will last for one hour and will support the classroom lesson plans.
Ms. Archer will be working with second- through fifth-grade students at Highlands Elementary and will be focusing on music. VSA Florida feels that student production of art leads to a sense of self-accomplishment through creation and mastery.
