More than 100 10th-graders from
Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School recently participated in the Second Annual Neuro-Anatomy Day at Medtronic, Jacksonville. Medtronic is a leading developer of products to treat people with diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
The partnership between Medtronic and Darnell-Cookman has generated an incredible opportunity for high school students to observe and interact with world-class surgeons, engage in hands-on learning with high tech surgical equipment and ultimately gain a better understanding of various aspects of the medical field.
Medtronic arranged for surgeons from all over the world to come and present to the students. Dr. Biceroglu from Turkey gave an incredible 3D brain anatomy presentation. Dr. Valentine (Australia) and Dr. Funaki (Japan) demonstrated the approaches to the brain through the nose and through an open craniotomy.
The students were also given the chance to use Medtronic technology to perform “surgery” on grapefruits and boiled eggs.
The students and faculty at Darnell-Cookman cannot say enough about this experience.
“Medtronic enriched our students’ lives and we can only hope to continue this incredible partnership in the future,” said counselor Lacey Fricker.
