The First Coast High School NJROTC unit recently participated in the Area 12 Orienteering (land navigation) Championships held at Mistletoe State Park in Appling, Georgia. The unit finished seventh overall and qualified for the NJROTC National Orienteering Championship Invitational that took place this past weekend and includes all NJROTC units in the United States.
This is the first time the First Coast High School NJROTC unit attended a national championship competition. Less than 300 cadets of the approximately 85,000 cadets in the NJROTC program have the opportunity to participate.
Orienteering is an individual and team sport that combines a great blend of physical fitness/endurance and intellectual effort and strategy. Orienteering requires higher order and critical thinking skills when using a compass and deciphering a topographical map, while expeditiously navigating through some challenging and rugged terrain under time restraints and battling the elements of inclement weather.
