Congratulations to students from
Paxon School for Advanced Studies for being named the winners of the 2011 Florida LifeSmarts Competition. The Paxon team beat nine other teams who had qualified online to participate in the game-show style challenge open to students in grades nine through 12.
LifeSmarts is an educational program created by the National Consumers League and sponsored by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Through online challenges, LifeSmarts teaches teens to be smart and responsible consumers and citizens. Topics focus on personal finance, consumer rights and responsibilities, health and safety, technology and the environment.
Students who participate in the program gain consumer knowledge, access to information, awareness to resources, and the ability and confidence to participate in today’s dynamic global marketplace.
As the winner of the Florida LifeSmarts competition, the Paxon
students went on to compete in the National LifeSmarts Competition, held April 30 through May 3, 2011, in Los Angeles, California. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provided the funds for the team to go to the national competition.
The three-day competition against 32 other
teams found the Paxon team in the quarter finals. Defeat came at the hands of
the team from Kansas, which went on to win the national competition. The
fourth-place win garnered each Paxon team member a $200 savings bond and a $25
Target gift card.
In addition to the team event, there were individual contests in each of
the five curriculum areas. Brian
Vermillion placed first in the personal
finance category and was rewarded with a $500 scholarship. The team includes the following students and coaches: Alexandria Heath; Bryan Johnson; Lester Manly; Christine Simmons; Brian Vermillion; Kathryn Loggie, Coach; and Melony Vermillion, Assistant Coach.
