The students at
San Mateo Elementary recently had an opportunity to spend time with local author Jane R. Wood. Ms. Wood visited the school as part of the culminating event for Writer’s Camp in preparation for FCAT Writes.
The fourth-grade students were treated to a two and a half hour active writer’s workshop. During the workshop Ms. Wood shared important tips the students can use to strategically map out their thoughts in a clear and concise manner. She also shared ideas on good writing techniques that would assist in adding explanatory details to their essays that will allow them to compose engaging stories.
Ms. Wood concluded her presentation with specific FCAT Writes ideas such as using vivid language that draws a picture in the reader’s mind, chronological organization and conventions. The students were excited to learn these new skills and to apply them to their writings.
Throughout the morning, the students had the opportunity to ask Ms. Wood questions about what it takes to be a respected writer and how she realized that writing stories was what she wanted to do for her career.
As a reward for their hard work, students were then treated to a cook out provided by the PTA! This was a truly rewarding experience for the students and it will greatly benefit them when it comes time to take the FCAT writing test.
