James Weldon Johnson Wins First Place in Math Counts

Students at James Weldon Johnson recently participated in a grueling math competition at the University of North Florida University Center. Even with a lot of competition, they won first-place overall and will be heading to the state competition!

Math Counts is the largest math competition in Florida with 51 participating schools and more than 400 participants from across the region. The competition is comprised of different events that showcase individual talent and combined team efforts.

One of the events involves the top 10 individuals competing against one another in a one-on-one face-off where they are given three questions to answer in front of the remaining participants. Three James Weldon Johnson students made the top 10 list. Sindee Lee placed seventh; Robin Zeng placed fourth; and Mark Kwak came in third-place. This high stress individualized competition is one of the most difficult events held at any math competition, so congratulations to these students for this outstanding achievement!

The students from James Weldon Johnson also received first-place and a trophy in the ciphering round. The final scores to be given were the team scores which are calculated based on the sum total of all the points gained individually and as a team. The team, consisting of the three students listed above and Bhavik Desai, was thrilled when they were announced as the winners.

The second- and third-place overall winners were Mandarin Middle and Landon Middle, respectively. Congratulations to these teams for an awesome job and keep up the hard work!

We would also like to congratulate Dipayan Banerjee, an eighth-grade student at Mandarin Middle, who was the overall individual winner in the competition out of more than 350 participants!

The state competition will be held in Orlando on March 25. We wish every student and school team competing good luck. We know you all will do a fantastic job!
