This time of year is possibly the most stressful part of the school year for teachers. With FCAT close at hand, teachers are working tirelessly to prepare their students in order to meet goals to show yearly progress. During this time, teachers seem to neglect their own health and emotional well being because they are so in tuned to their students’ and family’s needs.
Staff at
Mandarin Oaks Elementary (MOE) thought about what they could do to help them perform better in their jobs and improve their family life. They decided to have a weekly Weight Watchers at Work Program at school.
Currently, there are 15 teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals who attend weekly meetings to discuss creating a healthier lifestyle for
themselves and their families.
After five weeks of meetings, the team has collectively lost 110 pounds!
“We are very excited about our newfound relationships with each other and the support we have found through these relationships,” said Assistant Principal Donna Carmell. “Our group leader, Mrs. Doris Fuqua, has done a fantastic job motivating us through the highs and lows of weight loss. We all share ideas about cooking, shopping and exercising to make this process fun while we learn new ways to address dealing with stress and everyday challenges. The final result of this will be that everyone will be seeing a lot less of us!”
