Tale Tellers Visit Fort Caroline Elementary Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Classes

Kindergarten students at Fort Caroline Elementary were visited by a special guest reader, Mrs. Mary Webster. Mrs. Webster is part of the RSVP Tale Tellers of Duval County. She has been working with each of the kindergarten classes on Friday mornings for the past few weeks.

RSVP Tale Tellers of Duval County is a national Senior Corps program, sponsored by the City of Jacksonville, Recreation and Community Services Department, Adult Services Division. These are special volunteers, 55 years and older, who volunteer their time by reading weekly in Duval County Public Schools’ pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes.

During this past Friday’s visit, Mrs. Webster read to the students about the five senses. The book described the sense of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste and included pictures to demonstrate the uses. The students really enjoyed sharing stories about how they use their five senses every day. Some students talked about their pets, some talked about their favorite things to eat and some talked about the things they see in the sky.

Once Mrs. Webster had finished reading the book, she asked each student individually to name the senses they had just learned and rewarded one student with a banana for being a good listener.

These tale tellers make a lasting mark on the community. Each tale teller has been trained by a literacy specialist. The sooner children gain early reading readiness skills and language development, the greater their chances of succeeding in school and life. They help children experience a warm, supportive, interactive read-aloud experience.
