Congratulations to
Brentwood Elementary student Montero Brooks and the additional 80 students who participated in the North Jacksonville Police Athletic League LEGO block contest sponsored by the Association of Women in Construction.
The contest, open to first- through sixth-graders, called for the students to use 100 Lego blocks as well as choose three of four items - a rock, sheet of aluminum foil, piece of string or a piece of construction paper - and build something they could live, work or play in.
Brooks, inspired by the “W” Hotel in Atlanta, built “The World’s Tallest Hotel” during the competition.
The judges – all professional builders, engineers or contractors – asked the participants questions about the materials they were using for their project, and then judged each work on its creativity and attention to detail.
Four semi-finalists were chosen, and Jonathan Lanier's apartment building was named the winner while Traveas Graham received second place. The students won a $100 and $50 savings bond, respectively.
