Students from Frank H. Peterson Clean Up the Park

Frank H. Peterson seniors were involved in a service-learning project removing invasive plants at Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park. Eighteen students removed more than 100 pounds of air potatoes from the entrance drive to the park.

Air potatoes are considered one of Florida’s most invasive plant species. This non-native plant causes ecological damage by climbing other vegetation and forming dense canopies that shade out and cause the collapse of native plants.

The Grow, Learn and Serve with Florida Native Plants and Wildflowers project is one way for Peterson’s environmental science students to learn and support the natural area surrounding the school, and increase environmental students’ awareness of invasive and non-invasive plants.

The environmental science students improve their reading, vocabulary, and writing skills through research and hands-on activities as they prepare, plant and maintain a designated area on Peterson’s campus with native plants and wildlife shelters, and participate in environmental field trips in the community.
