Pre-kindergarten students at
Pinedale Elementary recently took part in the third annual Hungry Caterpillar Celebration celebrating the 42nd publishing anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle.
Pinedale first began this tradition in 2009 with just one class participating in the celebration. Over the past few years the event has grown to include the entire pre-kindergarten department.
Parents, students and guests spent the morning enjoying fun activities that incorporated key aspects of the story. There were several different stations set-up for the students to rotate through. At one station they were able to make caterpillar necklaces, caterpillar hats and butterflies. There was also a dancing station, which the students loved, and a station where they could listen to the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The most interesting station was the food station where the students were able to eat “strange” food just like the caterpillar in the story. This station taught the students about different kinds of food and the benefits these foods offer.
Pre-kindergarten teacher Kirk Altman was thrilled to have more than 80 students participating in this year’s event. This is a great, fun way for students to get excited about reading. With the success of this year’s event, it is certain that next year’s will be even better.
