Chets Creek Student Wins Sun Shade Essay Contest

The Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery Foundation (FSDDS) recently held its 4th annual Sun Defense Essay Contest among elementary schools throughout the state of Florida. The purpose of the FSDDS Florida Sun Defense Essay Contest is to educate elementary students and their parents about the importance of sun safety and to promote literacy.

Congratulations to Preston Gannam, fourth-grader at Chets Creek Elementary, for being selected as a winner in the Sun Shade Essay Contest and winning a sun shade structure for the playground at his school. Preston was one of five students selected statewide. Students were asked to write an essay, 500 words or less, about the importance of protecting themselves from the sun and why their school should receive a shade structure.

“He is an incredible kid who is, himself, a childhood cancer survivor. His essay is touching,” said Principal Susan Phillips.
