Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program Grants Awarded to Six Elementary Schools

Six elementary schools have been awarded grant funds through the 2011-2012 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program with an estimated total value of $129,100. Schools will offer fresh fruits and vegetables as a snack to students during the school day as authorized by the Department of Agriculture through the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 (Farm Bill). This program targets low-income students based on the percentage of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals at each school.

The purpose of this program is to encourage students to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables by providing them as a healthy, tasty alternative to snacks that are high in fat, salt and sugar. The awarded elementary schools include:

  • Lake Forest Elementary;
  • Highlands Elementary;
  • Pinedale Elementary;
  • Carter G. Woodson Elementary;
  • Woodland Acres Elementary; and
  • Justina Road Elementary
Schools were required to submit a plan demonstrating a team-approach for implementing the program while integrating the program with efforts to promote sound health and nutrition, reduce obesity and encourage physical activity.
