Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center Celebrates Educational Addition

Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the addition of its Sensory Garden and Mobility Park. In July, the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation awarded Mt. Herman a grant in the amount of $53,787 for this Super Heroes project.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony began with a presentation of colors by Alden Road Exceptional Student Center’s color guard. The pledge of allegiance was then led by Kimberly Atkins, student in the high school division at Mt. Herman.

Guest speakers at the ceremony included Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals, School Board member Paula D. Wright and Lowe’s district manager Mark Smallwood. Immediately following the ribbon-cutting, students from each grade level participated in a banner parade that marched through and around the park.

After the banner parade, one of the school’s business partners, the Screaming Eagles, led a parade of students that comprise the graduating class of 2011 through the parking lot as fellow students and teachers clapped and cheered for them.

The event concluded with the dedication of their Special Olympics games by one of Mt. Herman’s students.

The Super Heroes project has been a culmination of shared ideas between the principal, Lowe’s representatives, district staff and facility contractors to produce a safe and enjoyable environment for the students of Mt. Herman.

This outdoor classroom and mobility park will enable Mt. Herman students to engage in and benefit from sensory materials, activities and outdoor-based classroom exercises, highlighting the relevance and relationships of curriculum. The park contains several pieces of educational equipment with numbers and geometric shapes that the students will be able to utilize to exercise their minds and bodies while outside of the classroom.

Many parents and community members came out to show support to the students and teachers at Mt. Herman and celebrate the wonderful addition to their school.
