Ramona Boulevard Elementary Students Learn to Serve Their Community

The Learn and Serve students at Ramona Boulevard Elementary have done a great job this year raising awareness for the difficult issues of bullying and acceptance of all people. The school has partnered with the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville (DSAJ) to learn more about those who may look, speak and learn differently from others and apply this knowledge to promote the idea of acceptance for any individual who may seem to “not fit in” at school.

The students at Ramona have attended many events associated with the DSAJ. At each event, they have helped children with disabilities create crafts and artwork, as well as played games and read books to them. It has been a very rewarding experience for the team at Ramona to see how these students have grown to become very comfortable communicating and interacting with other children who seem so different from themselves. The Learn and Serve program at Ramona Boulevard Elementary has positively affected the students as well as the lives of the children and families they have developed a relationship with in the DSAJ. The students have had the opportunity to get to know and truly accept others, who before may have bullied or disregarded these same children with disabilities.

Ramona Boulevard just recently had the privilege of attending the “Raise Your Voice for Service Learning” conference in Tallahassee. The students attended many exciting and educational workshops designed to enhance their knowledge of service-learning, and to discover how others are making a difference in their own communities through the Learn and Serve program.

The highlight of the trip to Tallahassee was meeting with Florida Representative Mia Jones. The students discussed with Representative Jones the important work they were doing in their community and communicated to her the impact the Learn and Serve program has had on them throughout this school year.
