Girls’ Inc. Recognizes DCPS’ Students for Achievements in Arts, Academics and Athletics

Girls Inc. of Jacksonville recently honored several students at the Girls’ Rights Week reception held at the University Club. Girls Incorporated’s Girls’ Rights Week is an annual celebration of girls advocating for their rights and positive change in the world.

Iricka Presley, a senior at Englewood High, was honored as Girls Inc.’s own “Girl of the Year.” Delores Barr Weaver, chair & CEO, Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation, presented the award as honorary chair honoring local “Girls in Action” and “Women of Vision.”

The reception honors girls in the fifth-, eighth- and 12th grade as well as trailblazing women who have outstanding achievements in the areas of academics, arts and athletics. Girls who were honored are:

ARTS—         April Meade, Brentwood Elementary;
                   Montana Dalton, LaVilla School of the Arts;
                   Jolisa Brinson, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts

ACADEMICS— Destinie Bowden, Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary;
                   Duneshka Moran, Baldwin Middle/Senior;
                   Amal Almechatt, Robert E. Lee High

ATHLETICS— Ceana Thornton, Chafee Trail Elementary;
                  Ilonna Hampton, Northwestern Middle;
                  Samantha Sherman, Paxon School for Advanced Studies

Girl of the Year Iricka Presley has been involved with Girls Inc. as a member, and now as a volunteer, for over six years. She was honored for her successful academic career and as a rising “Woman of Vision” looking toward a successful career as a registered nurse.
