Baldwin’s E.X.C.I.T.E Academy Assists at a Very Special Art Festival

Baldwin High School’s E.X.C.I.T.E Academy, Expediting Careers In Teachers Education, has been involved in many rewarding activities this year. The most recent event for the Teach students was volunteering at a very special art festival designed for students with disabilities.

The E.X.C.I.T.E. Academy director, Mrs. Jessica Parrish, arranged the field trip for students to gain experience working with students with varying needs. This event took place at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Students from each teaching academy class attended the field trip to give a helping hand at the festival. The students gained far more than mere work experience. They gained a perspective of an area of education that is often not as noticed on a daily basis in the lives of students. They learned that some educators face amazing challenges but reap heartfelt rewards when a student experiences success, even the tiniest success.

“My eyes were opened to the many different needs of these students and of the special care they need to experience life more fully,” said junior Lauren Clinton.

“This event helped us to interact with younger children; giving experience to future teachers,” said freshman Kristian Oliveras.

The students helped children with disabilities create art work.

“This was the best, most powerful field trip I have ever been on for school,” said sophomore Zach Drum.

For these students, the day spent with students with exceptionalities from across Northeast Florida was a rewarding day that was inspiring and beautiful.
