Biltmore Elementary School recently held its 3rd annual Math Field Day. The students participated in the Mini-Metric Olympics. This included activities such as the shot put and javelin throw that utilized a cotton ball and straw, respectively. The students who came closest to the correct estimation received medals.
Other activities included chuck-a-duck, where bean bags were thrown into a pocket to accumulate the greatest value, around the world with times tables, adding basic facts and using number recognition, and running in a meatball relay race to get an understanding that the least amount of time wins the race.

Once the students completed the games they were given prizes and a stamp in their “My Measurement Book” to represent that they had finished all of the stations. Upon completion the teachers collected the books for a drawing to win prizes donated by Subway and Winn-Dixie. Students also received a band that sported the logo “If You Played You Won.”
The stations were manned by student volunteers from the ROTC from Paxon School for Advanced Studies and Cadets from Camp Blanding.
Everyone who participated in the event had a wonderful time and realized how fun math could be. The goal of this event was to encourage the students, volunteers, parents, faculty and staff to embrace math and understand that math is exciting and is in every aspect of our daily lives.
