Fleet Readiness Center Southeast, Electronic Warfare (EW) division, code 4.5.4, has partnered with
Enterprise Learning Academy for the past two years in support of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program. During the 2009-10 school year, the EW division initiated a pilot tutoring/mentoring program for one of Enterprise Learning Academy's fifth-grade math classes. The intent was to provide engineers to assist students with improving their math skills throughout the school term.
The efforts of the program were so well received that West Wilson, the EW division director and Enterprise Learning Academy's principal Ms. Brown, agreed to expand the program to include the entire fourth- and fifth-grade math departments during the 2010-11 school year. The engineers that volunteered to participate in this program were as follows: Min Chun, Harris Donaldson, Jason English, Chi Huynh, Donna Jeter, Ken Knight, Jason Mapanoo, Mike McGinn, Eldred Mobley, Si Sooudi and Veronica Taylor.
The hope is to encourage young students to excel in math and science by contributing to the growth and development of key math and science skills during early education. The school hopes the participation will influence some of the students to become scientists and engineers in the future.
