Neptune Beach Elementary Students Crank Out Paper Cranes

The fourth-grade teachers at Neptune Beach Elementary read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes as part of their “Heroes” Unit in reading.

The story of Sadako’s courageous efforts is known throughout the world. The internet has dozens of stories of “1000 Paper Cranes” projects. The Japanese sent 10,000 paper cranes to the September 11 Memorial Museum in New York City after the twin towers tragedy.

In response to the recent tsunami disaster in Japan, the fourth-graders at Neptune Beach Elementary have been folding 1,000 paper cranes to show their empathy for the March 11, 2011 Japanese tsunami victims. It is the student’s hope that the people who live and work near the tsunami-damaged nuclear reactors will recover from this natural disaster to live long and prosperous lives.

In addition, the students have committed to folding 1,000 more cranes to send to the children at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
