Blessings in a Backpack officially launched their program at
Hyde Grove Elementary School with cheering students, special guests and volunteer recognition. Principal Nancy Carter welcomed all to the celebration. Charlene Shirk, Board member for BIB-Jax, emceed the event and introduced Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, who spoke to the students about the importance of education. Mayor Peyton then issued an official proclamation, proclaiming June 3 as Blessings in a Backpack Day in the city of Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Jaguars punter Adam Podlesh spoke to the students about the importance of education, nutrition and helping others, and how they need to feed their minds and their bodies with good nutrition. A fun “pop quiz” by Adam about nutrition garnered the students autographed Nerf footballs for correct answers. Stan Curtis, Founder of Blessings in a Backpack, was in attendance as well as the volunteers from the school and Hyde Park Baptist Church, who freely give their time each week to pack and deliver the food. The audience was then treated to a skit by the students who had performed in the school talent show the previous evening.
All in all it was a wonderful morning celebrating community support and volunteerism for students in need.
