Lake Forest Elementary Students Finish the School Year Strong

The last month of school was filled with many exciting events for the students of Lake Forest Elementary School. The red brick walls of the building have felt the rigor of academics as inquiry based learning captured students’ interests with hands-on projects, experiments and cooperative learning.

The month began with PTA Parent Volunteer Luncheon which celebrated the key members of the community who enhance the lives and academic needs of students. Vicki Drake, community involvement leader and Mrs. Renda Ajluni, principal, addressed the audience with an outpouring of appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the lives of students. The vital role that volunteers play in schools was a key component of the luncheon. The students showed their appreciation through the art of music as they played instrumentals composed by Mr. Wright, music instructor.

Later in the month, Lake Forest held a family Science Night in partnership with Communities in Schools. Parents and students worked together in the exploration of key concepts in science by visiting five stations relating to concepts based on the Sunshine State Standards and FCAT strands. Students and parents watched and participated in sublimation activities, generated and formed hypotheses about why popcorn pops, they learned whether Kool-Aid is a mixture or solution, they saw centrifugal force in action while making cotton candy, and launched rockets to understand the forces of motion. Mad Science of Jacksonville, Communities in Schools and school faculty members made it a night to remember for all.

As a reward for successful results on the FCAT, students were transported in a limo to Dave and Busters for a triumphant celebration. These students scored a level 5 on FCAT Writes this year. The students enjoyed great food and lots of fun. They were fine representatives of Lake Forest and DCPS.

During one of the last weeks of school, student engagement reached new heights as the Invention Convention and Science Fair participants presented their work and scientific findings. Students displayed and presented their inventions and/or projects to various grade levels. A sense of pride filled the media center as students engaged each other in the scientific methods of an experiment.
