Ramona Boulevard Students Participate in Buddy Walk to Raise Awareness of Down Syndrome

Earlier this school year, Ramona Boulevard Elementary was awarded a Florida Learn and Serve competitive grant. The school’s grant, entitled Learn & Serve Through Acceptance, provides students who are at-risk of demonstrating behavioral problems and making poor choices with the opportunity to study various health literacy behavior lessons, and implement knowledge on healthy behaviors regarding bullying through friendship development with Down syndrome students.

As part of their grant, the school has partnered up with the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville to help Ramona students gain awareness of human differences and to instill the value of acceptance within.

A few weeks ago, 15 Ramona students participated in the 2010 Buddy Walk at the Jacksonville Beach Seawalk Pavilion. The annual walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

The students really enjoyed participating in the walk, and are looking forward to more activities throughout the year with the Down Syndrome Association.
