Students and staff at
John Stockton Elementary recently participated in International Walk to School Day, and afterward had a special visit from a UF/Shands Trauma One helicopter.
Established to encourage students to walk or bicycle to school, International Walk to School Day emphasizes the importance of safe routes for students to get to and from school, as well as the importance of physical activity in children. The walk is administered by the Florida Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program.
During their walk, students reviewed safety tips, including "look left, right and left before crossing." They also carried signs that said "Stop for Pedestrians," "Caution: Children
Walking," and "Drive Carefully."
Fifth-grader and Safety Patrol member James F. was one of the students
assisting others with crossing the street, and he was happy to teach the other
students about safety.
“Teaching little kids how to walk safely is an important part of life. They need to be aware of their surroundings at all times, including before they cross the street and when they cross.”

Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were in attendance to encourage the students to pay attention and follow the safety rules. Also assisting the students at the event were FedEx employees and staff from UF/Shands.
After the walk, the entire school gathered to watch the Trauma One helicopter land, and even had the chance to get an up close tour of the helicopter.
