Students from Fletcher Middle Attend the Florida Scholastic Press Association District Workshop

On Saturday, October 2, 15 eighth-grade students from Fletcher Middle School travelled with their journalism teacher, Lindsay Layendecker, to the University of Florida to participate in the Florida Scholastic Press Association District workshop (FSPA). This was the second year Fletcher Middle has attended FSPA.

The Florida Scholastic Press Association is comprised of more than 300 student publications, online media teams and broadcast programs throughout the state. The primary aim of this organization is to educate, train and support scholastic journalists and their advisers.

The students attended courses with professors and industry professionals where they learned about the journalism field and media industry. While there, the students were given a private tour of UF’s College of Journalism. Other workshop activities included guest speakers, hands-on sessions, student representative elections, district director elections, advisers' business meetings and various student contests.

"It was a unique and affordable opportunity for the students," said Layendecker. "This was truly a fieldtrip that provided numerous opportunities for learning and exposure to the university system."
