Spotlight On Education

Title One Parent Advisory Council Forum Brings Parents and Administrators Together

The Title One Parent Advisory Council recently hosted a Parent Forum to talk with more than 200 parents and administrators about the importance of parent involvement, early literacy and positive encouragement.

Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals began the morning by speaking about the updated Strategic Plan for the 2010-11 through 2013-14 school years. His overall message to the parents and administrators was the district is heading in the right direction. He also noted with more money going to schools, we should continue to see vast improvements over the next couple of years, and see the district grade increase from a “B” to an “A.”

Parents and administrators also had the opportunity to hear from the director of the Jacksonville Public Library about important events and services offered to students and parents, such as online homework help and tutoring. Later, School Board member W.C. Gentry spoke on the vital role his parents played in his education. For Gentry, his parents were the only constant force in his life from elementary through high school, and their support is what encouraged him to thrive in school.

The morning ended with group sessions to continue the discussion of the important keys to success for the students in our school system. School Board member Betty Burney led one of these groups, which focused on acknowledging the various learning styles students’ possess. By adapting teaching and studying habits to support each learning style, Burney believes students are likely to perform better.

The goal of the Parent Forum was to encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s education and to make them aware of the resources accessible to them to ensure their child receives the best education possible.
