Under the leadership of former director Mr. Whalen, the
Oceanway Middle School Band became an award-winning band program. When Mr. Whalen left the school last year to become the new band director at
Atlantic Coast High School, the band program welcomed a new leader: teacher and director, Daniel Taylor. The school’s teachers, staff, students and parents are excited about the addition of Taylor and the continued growth of the Oceanway Middle Band.
“Oceanway Middle is an extremely blessed school that has a great academy program, partly because of our excellent electives, including our performing arts program, choir, symphonic band, beginning band, and drama and music appreciation classes,” said Oceanway parent and band booster Renee Harriman. “Our elective programs help increase our students’ knowledge in the core classes. They are also wonderful opportunities for the new middle school students coming from our three feeder elementary schools to develop relationships with other students and find their way.”
The Oceanway Band Boosters will soon begin a new fundraiser to help the students purchase instruments. Booster members are asking the Oceanway community to donate any older band instruments they have in their attic or closets. If instruments are donated, they can either be refurbished and incorporated into the program, or they can be traded for credit to purchase the instruments the program needs. The boosters also welcome financial contributions to assist with the upkeep and maintenance of the band program.
