Fifty French students from six Northeast Florida schools recently gathered at
Mandarin High to celebrate French culture.
Arriving with posters, videos and desserts to enter in a contest, students spent the day immersed in the language. After ice-breaker activities, they played the French game of petanque and created letter-bead jewelry with French expressions. They painted backdrops and performed La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, to rap and rock beats while digital cameras rolled.
Funded by a National French Week grant from the American Association of Teachers of French, organizers Lauren Doyle-McCombs, Cheryl Thingvold and Dawnielle Jacobson also had the support of Foreign Language Educators of North East Florida.
French Cultural Immersion Day will be an annual event to showcase students' skills. Student-created materials from the event will be used to promote the choice of French in schools.
