Students at Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center recently enjoyed a morning of arts and crafts at their annual art festival. Throughout the morning, the students spent time at four craft stations making decorations for the holidays.
At the first station the students were able to express their creativity on a piece of large banner paper using a paint brush and their choice of red, yellow or green paint. These colorful banners will be used to re-cover the giant wooden lollipops that currently decorate the gym.
At another station, cut-out hand prints were used to create a giant Christmas tree. Each student was given a green hand print made out of construction paper to glue onto the Christmas tree outline. Before gluing the hand print onto the paper the students bent the fingers to stand out like branches on a tree, then they secured the hand in place.
The third station consisted of sponge stamps, square tiles and more paint. Students selected a tile to decorate and then chose what type of sponge they wanted to stamp on the tile. They could choose a Christmas tree, a snowman, a star, a bell or a snowflake. After they had stamped one of the tiles, the students were able to choose another tile to decorate anyway they wanted. This was their favorite part of the morning!
For the final station, the students created a giant stocking made out of torn pieces of paper and cotton balls. The students selected red, yellow or green construction paper, ripped off pieces of any size, and then glued them together into the shape of a stocking.
Students from John E. Ford assisted with the art festival as part of their school’s Learn and Serve Grant. The students from John E. Ford helped rotate the Mt. Herman students through the four different craft stations and some spent their time reading to one of the classrooms.
