Colonial Day Fairs Come to Mayport Middle and New Berlin Elementary

Mayport Middle School recently sponsored a Colonial Fair that focused on the original 13 colonies.

Each group of students was assigned a colony to research and represent during the fair. They created poster boards, cooked food from that period, dressed in period clothing and gave presentations about their various colonies explaining why a colonist would want to move there.

Each student was able to answer questions about their colony’s climate, environment, indigenous peoples, relations between each colony, economic activity and the reasons why each colony was founded, ranging from religious freedom to economic and political freedom.

Fifth-grade students at New Berlin Elementary also recently took part in a Colonial Day celebration when they spent a full day learning about the Colonial lifestyle.

Students participated in hands-on activities including silhouette drawings, handwriting with feather pens, candle making and cooking apple fritters. The activities at the different colonial day booths helped the students experience what life was like as a colonist living in the early 13 colonies.

Games such as Jacks, Hopscotch and Blindman's Bluff were a hit with the students, and everyone, including the school’s fifth-grade teachers, got in the spirit of the celebration by dressing up for the day in authentic Colonial costumes.

This is the fourth consecutive year New Berlin has hosted this wonderful learning event focusing on our nation's history.
