DCPS' Students Participate in "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!"

Duval County Public Schools participated in various district-wide activities throughout "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!" during the week of January 23-27, to promote the importance of reading.

Two of these activities included Monday's Million Minutes event and Family Reading Night held at 11 Chick-fil-A locations to promote Read It Forward Jax!

The goal of the Million Minutes event was to kick-off the week by engaging every student in reading activities. More than 20,000 students throughout the district selected their favorite book to spend the designated amount of time reading.

Attached is a list of each school that participated in this activity with the number of minutes read by all participating students. Engaging in a school-wide literacy activity sets a great example for every student to understand the significance of reading a little bit every day.

Duval County Public Schools ended the first day of Celebrate Literacy Week with a city-wide Family Reading Night at multiple Chick-fil-A locations throughout Jacksonville. Students, parents, teachers and administrators were asked to attend one of the Chick-fil-A locations to participate in book readings and literacy activities. Each school principal was given a ticket for parents and students to fill out to be counted for their school's participation and to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a basket filled with literacy tools and resources.

A winner was randomly selected from each of the 11 locations. The list of these winners can be found here. Congratulations to all of these individuals!

Following the event, the tickets were tallied to determine which school won the Superintendent's Award with the most participation. After counting all of the tickets, the winning school was San Pablo Elementary with 118 tickets. As the winner, San Pablo will receive a faculty breakfast sponsored by Chick-fil-A. Superintendent Pratt-Dannals will attend the breakfast to present a certificate to the principal.

"Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!" was a huge success throughout Duval County public schools. These events were just a couple of the many great events that students participated in to show their love of reading.
